Roving report #1: Leeds

Leeds

Date visited: 15 May 2010

Distance from Manchester: approx. 55 mins by train from Piccadilly

Things to see and do:

  • the Opera. We went to see La Boheme which was really great. My first mainstream opera (I’ve had an eclectic introduction so far). Excellent cast, beautiful, heartbreaking melodies, great set and choreography. And no queue for the bar. Sublime!
  • the shopping, especially the Victoria Quarter
  • the Corn Exchange
beautiful and currently underused space with a lovely restaurant in the basement
  • Leeds Kirkgate market
typical tack but great Edwardian architecture
  • the Henry Moore Institute. Shame the main Hermann Obrist exhibition was closed but we did see some  amazingly intricate Ice-age sculptures
great building
Carved reindeer antler depicting a mammoth, originally part of a spear © British Museum
  • Leeds Art Gallery, which has an interesting collection of British modernist art. Unfortunately no pics of that as there was a security guard around, but I did get:
a Henry Moore
and an Antony Gormley
and another.

Would we go again? To the opera – definitely. To the city – perhaps, especially if there was an exhibition on, but then we have other cities to explore, including our own.
