I have a half written Venice post but there are so many photos to sort through I never seem to find the time to finish it. In the meantime, here are a few snaps from the recent Weinfest right here in Staufen.
It all begins on Friday evening with canon fire from the castle (pictured in the distance above) and then a parade through the town. Local wine growers don traditional costumes and make their way through the main street of Staufen accompanied by the bands of the surrounding towns and villages. The incoming wine queen and her princesses (I kid thee not) are transported by horse and carriage to the main square, and if you can suspend your disbelief and remember that it’s basically a massive advertising event for the winegrowers, it’s really quite something!
After the parade, we explored the show ground and undertook the serious task of sampling the wines and sekts of the various vineyards and taking a little boy on his first carousel and ferris wheel rides.
After all the fun of the fair and with the sun setting behind us, it was only fitting that we should return home via the vineyards.
